Event Description:
The purposes of the Research-Based Reading Institute for grades 3-6 are to review current literary practices and philosophies and to aid teachers in the implementation of guided reading, self-selected reading, literacy stations, phonics (word study), and writing instructional techniques. With the Response to Intervention model currently underscoring the necessity to document learning based on data, teachers must understand
how to best utilize the time available for reading instruction. Everyone seems to be
aware of what is needed, but schedules and time constraints are often roadblocks. With
the help of classroom management techniques, the task may become easier or at least less frustrating. During these two days, teaching methods that correspond with the five research-based components of reading, such as how to use decodable readers and leveled passages, will be introduced in order to help develop a strong, research-based literacy program.

Presenters: Wendi Nurrenbern and Susan Parnell are members of SINE’s Consultants in Education professional training cadre. Both Wendi and Susan are highly-qualified
trainers, specializing in literacy areas. They have personally trained hundreds of teachers in Southwest Indiana in DIBELS. Wendi and Susan then developed the follow-up DIBELS Interventions workshops to provide teachers with instructional strategies to address student learning needs revealed through the DIBELS assessments.

Event Description:
The objective of the Research-Based Reading Instruction Institute is to assist teachers in implementing instructional strategies that help children learn to communicate ideas, to understand the relationship between letters and sounds, and to develop listening comprehension. Teachers play such a critical role in the reading success of children, especially in the early stages of their learning, and this institute will help you provide the
foundation your students need to become successful readers. The two-day workshop
focuses on the components of research-based reading instruction and includes methods and strategies to support your instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In addition, the institute will highlight effective
instructional practices such as grouping, literacy stations, classroom management
techniques, writing, techniques to monitor student progress in order to guide instruction, and interventions for struggling readers. Learning how to drive instruction from assessment and how to document learning based on data are other critical components of the Response to Intervention model. Plan to attend and assess your current literacy practices.

Event Description:
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. They are designed to be short (one minute) measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills. The DIBELS
are comprised of measures to test fluency in the following areas: Initial Sounds, Letter Naming, Phoneme Segmentation, Nonsense Words, Oral Reading, Retelling, and Word Use. These areas will be familiar
to Indiana K-3 teachers, as most are included in the Indiana standards for English/Language Arts.

The two-day training in the DIBELS measures is designed to provide an in-depth understanding not only of the background and research but in-depth training in administration and scoring of the measures. The following will be addressed:
• Why use DIBELS?
• What is the latest research on DIBELS?
• How are DIBELS linked to core components of learning to read?
• How can DIBELS data be used to make educational decisions?
• How is DIBELS administered and scored?
This workshop will provide hands-on practice in administering and scoring DIBELS. Manuals and materials,
including a clipboard and stopwatch, will be provided to workshop participants. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
