Event Description:
Are you interested in taking a closer look at the new math standards? Would you like more ideas for helping your students master the basic facts? Are your students struggling with solving multi-step word problems, like those given on ISTEP?

Come spend the day with Kay Davidson, Indiana teacher, national presenter, and author of The Simple 6™ Writing Program, who now brings you The Simple 6 for Math!

The Simple 6™ for Math is designed to help your students become better problem solvers. Tied directly to the 2009 Indiana Academic Standards for Mathematics and ISTEP, this workshop gives you an opportunity to take a closer look at the new standards. What’s new? What’s changed? What’s missing? From there we’ll talk about the importance of basic fact mastery and how school districts must articulate their expectations not only to master basic facts, but to maintain those skills.

You’ll learn how to attack any word problem using The Simple 6™ for Math.

READ * ASK * PLAN

Then stop, and use one (or more) of 9 problem-solving strategies.

SHOW * SOLVE * CHECK

We’ll be solving problems, taking a look at nine problem-solving strategies at three different levels, and learning what it means to “show your work”. Modeling just one problem a week will give your students a tremendous advantage on ISTEP—and you’ll have those problems in your hand when you leave!

Come join us for this outstanding workshop, designed specifically for Indiana teachers in grades 3-6. All participants will receive a copy of the book, The Simple 6™ for Math, by Kay Davidson, which is grade-level specific.

Event Description:
SINE and Vincennes University are pleased to once again offer the Manufacturing Technology Explorer’s Camp. SINE is sponsoring these 4-day camps, held on the VU campus, for students who are completing 8th or 9th grades under terms of a grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

These summer camps will give students hands-on observation and learning opportunities in such topics as Computer Aided Design, Computer Controlled Machining, Lasers, Robotics, Statistical Quality Control, etc. Sessions will be conducted by VU faculty in VU's state-of-the-art Technology Center. Two plant tours are planned for each camp.

Students will arrive on campus late Sunday afternoon and stay until Wednesday afternoon. They will live in student campus housing, eat in student dining facilities, and, in general, get a taste of college campus life. They will be appropriately chaperoned throughout their stay. There is no cost to the student for these camps.

The primary focus is on students completing the eighth or ninth grades with an interest in mathematics, science, and technology. Technology sessions will be conducted at the appropriate level. It is a natural extension of Project Lead The Way activities.

It is vital that students get exposed to and learn about technology in the workplace. Manufacturing contributes about 20% of the United States GDP. There is now, and will continue to be, a shortage of workers with the necessary training and education to perform the kinds of jobs that 21st century manufacturing demands.

The necessary registration and health forms are available above. Forms require a parental signature, so must be downloaded and faxed or mailed to SINE by April 24th. For additional information, contact Don Carrell at 812-677-6444 or by e-mail at dcarrell@sineonline.com.
